Several reasons make your bedroom smell bad in the mornings, more so if you sleep with your window closed. Several external sources produce the odor we despise in the morning. However, believe it or not, most of the foul smell in the ambiance is produced by your own body.

I’m going to explain where that bad smell in your room comes from, the reason for it, and what you can do to prevent it.
Top Things Why Your Room Smells in the Morning
Dirty Floor
This source of foul smell applies if you have a carpet or a big rug in your bedroom. Even with regular cleaning, there’s always dirt, dust, and bacteria that will stay attached to it and start smelling over time.
A good option to prevent this is to change your rug for a new one every few years. If you have a carpet that covers your whole bedroom floors, there are companies specialized in cleaning, with industrial equipment, that can leave it as clean as new.
Dirty Clothes
If there is an awful smell in your room in the morning, or whenever you leave windows and doors closed for long periods, you may want to check where you leave your dirty clothes.
If you have a humper in your room where you put your workout gear, and you don’t do your laundry often, you may want to consider moving it elsewhere.

Dirty Sheets or Pillow Cases
To prevent your bedroom from smelling, it’s important to change the sheets and pillowcases regularly. If you keep them on for 2 weeks or more, the accumulation of sweat, oil, and dead skin will start emanating an odor that will invade the whole ambiance.
Although it’ll take longer than two weeks, the same thing will eventually happen with your mattress. Thanks to the sheets, the particles will take longer to attach, but after a couple of years, you’ll start noticing that some of the bad smell comes from the mattress.
Food or Drinks
If you’re used to eating in your room, whether, on your desk or your bed, there will probably be leftovers and crumbs you miss when you clean that will start smelling after some time.
If you think that bad odor may be coming from food leftovers, you’ll have to thoroughly clean the room, including under the bed and the mattress.
Your Pets
If you have a dog or a cat, these may very well be the reason why your room smells in the morning. Animal urine is one of the most difficult smells to get rid of, so if your pet urinates in your room clean it as soon as possible.
Also, keep in mind that dogs like to play and roll around dirt and mud. If you let your pet sleep in your bed at night, it will probably emanate an intense odor that will impregnate your room, more so if you have your windows closed.

Bad Breath
Among the causes of bad smells in your room that are produced by your own body, you’ll find bad breath is one of the most important.
If you have a small room and you like to sleep with your door and windows closed, then bad breath will be an inevitable cause for bad smell in the ambiance.
Your breath, like everyone else’s, is filthy when you’re sleeping, and all the CO2 you emanate with every breath you take, will keep circulating overnight until it’s time to wake up and you open a window or your door.
Body Odor
Sleeping is so much more than just resting. While you’re asleep your body takes care of repairing any damage it may find. The result of this process is dead skin, sweat, and natural oils that your body exudes and stays in the room for the 6 to 8 hours you’re sleeping.
The most important source of odor is sweat, which the body emanates in an attempt to regulate your body’s temperature. There’s not much you can do about it except keep your sheets and mattress as clean as possible so the foul smell will not accumulate.
How to Keep Bedroom Smelling Fresh
After researching all the possible reasons that cause a bad smell in my room in the morning, I’ve decided to look a little further into the possible solutions. Here’s what I found:

Air Circulation
Cracking a window open may be one of the best solutions, apart from cleaning your room often of course. Leaving for 15 minutes a day the window open may help clean air circulate in the room overpowering any bad smell.
Air Refreshers
If you’ve cleaned your room but the bad smell persists, you can buy air refreshers. They are cheap and come in many different fragrances. You may even find some alternatives that come in decorative presentations, which would be a perfect addition to your room.
